The clown - Make it stand out I arrived at the site in a local park at around 9.30 am. It took me a while to set up and plan for the location and surroundings. It was the day before the Carnival began. Their rehearsal day and the first time I had shot any of them! So we were all a little weary of what was to come. I remember thinking that i needed the sun or natural light infront of me and to find something I could use to sit people on. As long as I can shade the lens I prefer to shoot into the light rather than have strong light effect my subject. So enclosed pockets of shadow are great. I looked around the field and found a huge steel rope wooden reel. It was part of the set but they let me use it for the shoot. It was perfect and it meant that I didn’t have to carry my lights around the entire field but could have the performers come to me. I always as mentioned in other articles look to get my main/key light correct first. The first shoot is always the hardest and always takes the longest as you are changing the lighting as you go. I set up one of favourite soft boxes, the 190 indirect. I have a large Manfrotto stand for this with wheels. So I took the wheels off and dug it into the ground, I think I ended up using a couple of bags also to keep it from blowing away. ( I now use rope and camping ground screws - they work great and allow me to anchor the main light down.) I knew I wanted the light to have little fall off and to wrap around the subject so I positioned it very close to my subject. The indirect Octa especially because the light is firing away from the subject it means that the edges are where the best light is. So I feathered the box a little. Adding a second light to the scene is my go too also. I try and use the second light in the sky, this gives me a perceived direction of light or a motivation for the light. It isn’t always possible to give the light motivation ( make is make sense ) but I try and do it as often as I can. I used a 3 stop ND filter for this shot also. If you’d like to read more of why I use ND filters for my portrait work then CLICK HERE. I like using strong light and by this I mean I like to use the power the light has. So my main light is set to f9 - using a 3 stop ND filter allows me to use f5 as my aperture to give a shallower DOF. But the power of the light is actually f9. This gives me a better ‘wrap’ around the subject than a less stronger light output. I am also limited to 125th FSS so in order to keep my aperture open ( more so in brighter conditions ) I have to use the ND filters. I agree the difference is minimal but to me it does make a difference and I like to shoot this way. I had around 10 performers to shoot taking around 20 mins with each one. I took this image in between takes as often is the case for the best images. I saw him looking down still in character and knew that this was the pose I needed. I knew I didn’t want a portrait of a smiling clown but a more of an air of melancholy around him. It worked a treat. I also shot the Clowns portrait on a 55mm lens ( medium format ) so equivalent to a 35mm lens. I wouldn’t usually use this for portraits but as it was a loose shot with more background it worked. I usually have the bottom of my key light parallel with the subjects face but I knew as they were mostly sitting that I wanted a little more light down the subjects legs etc so I pointed the box down a little more to achieve this. I was very happy with the results from this day and it just shows that if you make an effort and get out there good things will come. I was fortunate to later have Ricoh | Pentax approach me on the strength of this image & others and ask me to be the UK/European Ambassador for the Medium Format camera which I was honoured to be. To this day this images remains one of my favourites and without a doubt re-kindled my passion for location lighting & portraiture. I agreed. I knew that if I got in there they might soften up a little and I could get a few portraits. If you’ve never seen the ship breaking yards it’s something to behold. Huge 70,000 ton cruise ships & ferries from all over the world. Coming here to their final resting place. How ironic that whilst writing this post that the very ship I worked on for 6 years in Miami has gone to its final resting place, I believe a breakers yard in Turkey. Sad end for some great memories and a big chapter of my life. I have to say it was a hard experience as there were eyes watching at every step, watching what I was shooting. It made it hard to incorporate anyone into the framing but whilst their heads were turned I managed to take a few images of the ships but finding people in there also. I knew if I pushed my luck it would ruin the moment and permission I had to be there. So at one point I suggested that we do a team shot of some of the men, this went down very well with the workers and after this the major ( as he wanted to be called ) seemed to let me do a little more than what was agreed on. It was a day and experience I will treasure forever. It’s funny when I think about it how I remember such things that I did 20 years ago. The diary has helped immensely in recalling times and events that might have slipped my mind. It’s almost as if the process of taking a photograph freezes the moment in your brain and soul. I stayed for around 2 hours, it was sweltering and I shot around 4 rolls of slide film. What a site that would of been. Ruins of blackened marble across the river seemed to support this legend but I guess we will never know! One thing is for sure it is an awe inspiring place and no matter how many times you visit it it gives you something else. Just get there as early as you can or try and cross the river! After leaving Agra, and parting ways with Mika, my German friend ( he was meeting me in Varanasi but would take a few days to get there on his bike) I headed east to Varanasi. Showing one of the smaller burning ghats. We had permission to shoot for 5 mins from the men on the hill on the left. So I guess I thought it would be similar on this trip, not to be. I knew better than to try again in 2008. The ghats, especially the burning ghats are a place like no other on earth. When we did go back having met up again with Mika, we just sat there and stayed very quiet with eyes on us all the time but I knew it was a place I needed to go back too to just see. The burning ghat or Manikarika is the place where the majority of dead bodies are cremated in Varanasi. Approx 28,000 every year. Hindus believe it will liberate them from the cycle of death & rebirth. Varanasi is the only city in India where pyres burn 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The city is believed to be so sacred, the demand for funerals is high. I once read an account of Varanasi by Photographer Peter McBride and I couldn’t say it any better myself… “When you step off a wooden boat onto the banks of the burning ghat in the oldest of India’s cities and you weave through a maze of funeral pyres, hissing, steaming and spitting orange embers into an inky night and you feel the metronome clang of bells vibrating inside your chest and a wave of furnace-like heat consuming everything in its reach. You realise how removed you truly are from the ritual of death.I stepped on to Varanasi’s famous ghat which runs 24/7 , burning 100’s of bodies in plain sight. It dawned on me how physically distant most of us are from the departed. In the west, the dead are typically hidden, taken away - either to be beautified for a funeral or to be cremated, depending on beliefs. Either way, bodies are rarely seen again. Some might argue it is civilzed, cleaner or perhaps just emotionally easier. Or perhaps it is just the modern world’s subtle way of hiding from the inevitable.The hindus believe that if a deceased ashes are laid in the Ganges at varanasi, thieir soul will be transported to heaven and escape the cycle of rebirth. INDIA - a love affair - 1995 - Make it stand out You can see from the contact sheet how the framing changed as the moment passed. I like the first frame but remembered being concerned about the horizon being too high so I got down lower and more parallel to him. To be honest all four frames work pretty well as he is saying his morning prayer to the sacred river. Not being able to check the camera made it looking back now a lot harder yet somehow more rewarding. We didn’t know any better! The exposure had to be spot on, using the internal meter on the camera and slightly underexposing. This set of negatives is actually in pretty bad nick to be honest. Somehow they stuck to the inside of the neg sleeve over the years, so a little gentle touch up in photoshop. Something we were only starting to her about at Uni that year, 1995. It had been out in public domain for 5 years having been developed in 1987! We didn’t take too much notice of its introduction at Uni, preferring to make little cardboard cut outs and dodge & burn by hand in the night of the darkroom. I had a Canon EOS 1000fn camera that my mother had bought me for Uni. Armed with a 35mm - 28mm & 50mm lens we headed out at dawn onto the river banks of the Ganga ( Ganges ) river in Varanasi. At that time of the morning the light is unimaginably beautiful just before the sun comes up and the opportunity for images was amazing. I remember seeing this man from a about 100ft away thinking if I can get behind him , close enough without him seeing me the chance for an image was there. Of course we were shooting film then, mostly T-max 100 or 400. I happened to have a roll of Ilford XP2 in the camera from the night before so I had 4 left on that roll. I took all four frames which was unusual for me because I had trained myself to shoot a maximum of two images in one place so it must have been good. I remember waiting for the boat to pass in the background but my main focus was on the figure in front of me. I have never bothered too much when composing an image about the horizon, usually it would be 2/3 up the frame going through the shoulder area but on this occasion it split the image in half. I love the boy also either putting on his shirt or removing it to go and swim in the coolness of the morning. I preferred when shooting to always keep my camera tucked behind my arm so it wasn’t the first thing people saw when I approached. Shooting with nothing else but a couple of rolls of film in my pocket and a battery or two. Forgive the sandals but I always travelled and dressed in a similar way, whether in the Amazon, Africa or Asia. That shirt, I think I had it until a few years ago when Kris emptied out the cupboards! Most men in India wear shirts and pants. Most tourists wear shorts and t-shirts. I remember thinking that ok, I am a tourist as well but it doesn’t mean I have to dress like one.
